Tell Tale Heart Guilt

“The Tell-Tale Heart”, written by Edgar Allen Poe, suggests that the stories theme is guilt. When a deed is done and guilt is hidden, it will torture the person. The characters of the story include an old man and a younger man living together. The younger man was going mad and murdered the old man because he was bothered by his third eye. The younger man then felt guilty, and confessed the deed. Edgar Allen Poe could have written the story to relate to his own life problems. For example, his wife died around this time and he is dealing with depression. (Mark, Canada) The intended result the author wanted from the audience would be to scare them. Also to make the readers see the death of the old man as if it were them; and to make them connect and feel one with the story.

(Mark, Canada) He wrote this story around the time of this event. He could have been venting and escaping from the madness in his own life which could have inspired him to write about a man with no name (probably using himself) going through his own version of madness.
Furthermore, Poe could have been writing to frighten his audience. He did this by using words and imagery that would make someone think of darkness and madness. Some of the words he used includes, darkness, haunted, evil, dreadful, death etc. The use of imagery is seen when describing the killing. “In an instant I dragged him to the floor, pulled the heavy bed over him. I then smiled gaily, to find the deed done.” (pg6) The way he describes it creates the horrific image that, what if someone is lying in bed and suddenly gets dragged out and killed. Even as he describes the moments leading up to death were quite horrific. The thought of a man hiding in darkness, plotting to kill, always spying, is scary itself, it makes the reader wonder and connect with the

Lady Macbeth and the narrator of The Tell-Tale Heart are unable to properly deal with their guilt. Although due to the short nature of the story we are unable to determine the final outcome for the narrator, we know that Lady Macbeth is unable to cope with the significance of her guilt and ends up committing suicide. In contrast, after a long time of living with the burden of their guilt, Briony and Dimmesdale are able to achieve a level of redemption. Dimmesdale finally explicitly confesses his sins to his community, standing at exactly the same platform where Hester was judged. The author describes the “flush of triumph in his face” and says that “in the crisis of acute pain [Dimmesdale] had won a victory” to show that Dimmesdale is now satisfied and is able to obtain a…

It recounts a madman´s perspective of killing another person because of his “evil eye.” In the end, he is overwhelmed by guilt and concedes the crime to the police (Beers 89-94). Clearly, the narrator was unstable in his thinking. Poe, like the narrator, may have been troubled in his mind. He would quiet his inner demons -- sorrow and depression -- with alcohol (Britannica 1).…

Although Poe’s short work of fiction does provide insight on the narrator’s madness, it does not induce psychotic thoughts. For instance, in lines 82-83 in “The Tell-Tale Heart,” the narrator says, “...Death, in approaching him, had stalked with his black shadow before him, and enveloped the victim.” Even though this is a particularly dark phrase, it is not entirely believable, since the narrator has repeatedly…

Character Analysis “The Tell-Tale Heart” is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe. This is a very tension filled story about a man that lives with an old man. The old man makes him very uncomfortable. In this story, Poe shows the mental state of the character by having him explain all the actions he takes in great detail, but not anything else like his name or where he is now. When he was in the room with the old man he quoted, “ All in vain; because Death, in approaching him, had stalked with his black shadow before him, and enveloped the victim”(38). I think the author is trying to show us how the character thinks that death is already upon the old man and that he will die anyways. After he kills the man he tells the reader, “If you still think me mad, you will think so no longer when I describe the wise precautions I took for the concealment of the body”(39). Hear the author shows the mental state of the character by making the reader want to question his state of sanity and for the character to describe in detail what he did with the old man’s body after he killed him.…

The underlying message of the story, “The Tell-Tale Heart” is to never lie, because it will come back and affect you. I chose this as the underlying message, because in the story, the narrator lies and gets caught later on. In real life, when you lie you might get caught or you might get away with it. It affects you no matter what, because if you don’t get caught, then you will sit there, dwelling on this lie. The story reads, “…The cry, I said, was my own, in a dream.…
