Compare/Contrast Essay

On tuesday, October 14 my eighth grade class went to ISU to watch plays on the stories we read in class. The plays were fun to watch but some of them were different than the book. Even though there were differences there were also some similarities.

In the play version of The Tell Tale Heart, there wasn't as much suspense that built up as there was in the book. For example, In the book it said that the servant of the old man stood at his doorway for a whole hour one night, but in the play that wasn't shown. The actor simply opened the door then closed it after a short time. Even the narrator never announced it. Another example of the suspense lacking would be when the servant of the old man in Tell Tale Heart didn't hide the body parts of the old man as carefully as the book made it sound. In the book the narrator described his ideas as, perfect or not crazy. In the play I didn't get that feeling or thought. It just looked like a normal crime scene to me. A final example of little suspense build up could be in The Raven. In the poem it built up suspense and made you think, ¨What´s going to happen next?¨ In the play they made it look like it wasn't a mystery but like it was a haunting. They feel was very different.

I like the play version because it made it sound less boring than the book. In the play they had the frogs act humorous and jump around in a funny way, but in the book it didn't say anything about the frogs doing funny stuff. Also they made Smiley look like he was more of a humorous person also. In the book I thought he was just a normal person who bet on

The short-story version of The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County was very different from the live performance version of it. For example, the characters are different between the two. Furthermore, certain pieces of information in these examples are missing. While the written story is entertaining, I was happier with the performance. If I could, I would go back to ISU and watch the plays again.…

Usually, if the audience that watched one of the many plays performed by others, they get the wrong information about what actually happened in the novel, like how in a play, Scrooge’s gravestone grows up to 10 feet high, begins to glow green, and has smoke coming from it. In the novel, however, the gravestone does not do anything that happened in the play, and it’s a normal gravestone. In short, the play and novel are similar in some ways, like how they are both based or loosely based on the novel, both versions have the three ghosts, and how Scrooge becomes good heart person and enjoys Christmas. They are also different, like how the ghosts are portrayed differently in the play and novel appearance…

Dancing Within Sanity Through the discourse of The Yellow Wallpaper and The Tell Tale Heart, both wrapped up and enclosed in the open space that entails its given genre, Gothic Literature. However, despite its given distinction of characters, settings, gender, and action, both are dually intertwined in regards to the nature each narrative and plot takes. The Tell-Tale Heart illustrates and manifests itself with a distinct narrator with a kind of “split nature”, a man who can perhaps be described as suffering from an intense form of paranoia, while the latter denoting an exacerbation of a mental condition and ultimately concluding with a paradoxical and freeing insanity, yet despite such unintended respite, both alike through the…

A play and a novel are two very different ways of telling a plot of a story. In the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry the audience is able to feel involved in the story through many aspects. Usually in novels it is consistent with one point of view through the story. However, in a play the audience is able to gain perspective from most of the characters. The stage directions in a play gives the reader an insight on the actions taken among a character.…

As we know, most short stories do not usually tell the audience its actual meaning is. There is not much you can get from just reading the title in most stories, in general. The title does not give us much information unless you look at the definitions of the title itself. A tell-tale is something that is portraying or revealing something.…

If Ibsen does not use suspense in his tale, the story would not feel serious but more of a joke. Therefore, suspense gives the story validation importance even though the story does give the reader some laughs. Ibsen also uses suspense to add flare to the moment making the story more personnel and emotional to the reader because you are taken with Nora through a roller coaster of obstacles that allows for the reader to have sympathy on Nora and see what she goes through to bring happiness to her family, which society makes extremely difficult to do. An example of suspense in “A Doll’s House” is when Torvald leaves the room with the letters while Nora is speaking to herself, “Never, never, Oh, the freezing black water! The depths – down Oh, I wish it were over – He has it now; he’s reading it now”…
