For example in the story the narrator was trying to directly prove to the readers that he was a normal sand person and it could be proven by his actions. “If still you think me mad, you will think so no longer when I describe the wise precautions I took for the concealment of the body… First of all I dismembered the corpse. I cut off the head and the arms and the legs.”. These actions, including the unnecessary murder, are obvious to the common person to be illogical and psychopathic. The next psychopathic action the narrator took was when the police showed up at the door in order to investigate a noise complaint and suspected foul play. The narrator then invites the police to come in and explains how he is house sitting for the old man and had a nightmare, which would explain the noise complaint. He then pulled up chairs into the room and sat the police directly above the area where he had stuffed the dismembered pieces of the old man under the floorboards. This is another blatant piece of evidence that the narrator is crazy and is clearly making conscious and deliberate decisions and should be held responsible for his actions. In the end the narrator began hearing the heart beat of his victim in his head but thought it was out loud and that the police could also here it and would know. As explained by Professor DiBartolomeo “Tell Tale Heart” was created for the purpose of, “reawakening or reminding us the notion that there are people in the world who for little or no reason will be provoked to do horrific things to you”. This perfectly describes the definition of a psychopath and specifically a serial killer, especially the one presented in this short
