I think the most evil villain between the stories, Tell-Tale Heart and the Landlady, is the landlady. I think that she is the most evil villain because, she says in the story, “I am a teeny- weeny bit choosy and particular--- if you know what I mean.” And, when the landlady and Mr. Weaver were walking up the stairs, this is what happened, “She was halfway up the stairs, and she paused with one hand on the stair rail, turning her head and smiling down at him with pale lips. “Like you,” she added, and her blue eyes traveled slowly all the way down the length of Billy’s body, to his feet, and then up again.” When she says this it kind of puts up a red flag of concern for Billy. Why she said that she was a bit choosy, was because she likes younger men/ boys because she stuffs them to use for her own enjoyment. …show more content…
And when she had exclaimed the part about not breaking the laws, she meant that she didn’t want to stop at that stage of the plan because she thought he was a good match for what she was looking for. “They were tall and young and handsome, my dear, just like you,” she exclaimed about the other two men, whose names were on the paper that Billy had to

Taking a look at the grandmother, it is important to note her namelessness, because this characteristic signifies a deeper symbolic meaning. The story begins, “The grandmother didn’t want to go to Florida” (1). There are three unnamed characters in the story: the grandmother, the children’s mothers, and The Misfit. Throughout, the grandmother is referred to by her title in place of her name, which allows the reader to see the grandmother as an illustration of the typical person. Because of her namelessness, she comes to represent everyone, and her external and internal conflicts with vanity, control, and egotism represent the collective of humanity’s struggles.…

The God of Small Things (TGOSM) by Arundhati Roy and Barbara Mutch’s The Housemaid’s Daughter (THD) explore an individual’s changing perception of themselves within a corrupt society during the 1960’s Communist era in India and the Apartheid era. TGOSM is set in Kerala, India and revolves around the traumatic childhood of two twins and THD is set in Cradock, South Africa where a black girl is raised within a white family, both facing adversity. They explore the lack of proper familial relationships that create a foundation for one’s values at a young age. This results into a loss of their innocence as the values taught are compromised and changes their self-perception when facing injustices. For these reasons, both texts reflect that an individual’s familial relations and loss of innocence affects their sense of self due to discriminatory and oppressive cultural expectations.…

Martin Luther King Junior once stated that “true peace is not merely the absence of tension, it is the presence of justice.” With this, it has been known that authors possess their own views of what individuals represent within a society, where there is tension between the majority and the individual. The works of “Once Upon A Time”, by Nadine Gordimer, “The Wife’s Story” by Ursula K. Le Guin, and the motion picture Invictus, directed by Clint Eastwood, all share a common underlying theme, or life lesson that is portrayed through a median. The common theme is that although it may be tempting to merge with the remainder of society, you must be who you truly are. To develop this theme, the authors place many symbols within their creation as…

The FBI once declared that the definition of serial murder is “the unlawful killing of two or more victims by the same offender(s) in separate events” (Pemment 2013). Although this disease does not affect everyone, it is common. The beginning of such a disease all starts with one murder. The cause for the killer’s “compulsion to kill may be likened to an addiction” (Dolan 51). Clearly, this thought of assassination has come to the killer's mind before his first kill because he would know it would be a fun hobby to do.…

Hilly Holbrook is undoubtedly the main villain of this novel. She presents herself to be a well put together woman on the outside, but throughout the novel, her true colors show and shows how she is manipulative, cruel, and wicked. Despite these characteristics, what makes her such a complex character is the way she treats her children. Hilly is unexpectedly an exceptionally loving mother. This complexity furthers the meaning of the novel by showing the audience that even though you have an excessive dislike for a person, somewhere inside they have some quality which is admirable.…

In “The Landlady”, Billy Weaver is lured into a seemingly normal bed and breakfast by an old lady who, despite her gentle and unthreatening appearance, wants to kill him. It is a story about how those with cruel intent may take advantage of those who are innocent and naive. Although the book and the movie can be arguably similar if generalized, there are many differences that may change the way a reader/viewer may grasp the concept of the story. Since a movie and book cannot be exactly the same, the film version is bound to have things that differ from the text. One example of how the book develops the development of the story is with the setting.…
