Edgar Allan Poe used the literary device of setting to create a dark, threatening tone in his short story “Tell-Tale Heart” by using mood and atmosphere, population, and time/of day. Poe used mood and atmosphere to make the readers feel like if they were in the story. You can see this when he wrote”I had made an opening sufficient for my head, I put in a dark lantern, all closed, closed so no light shone out”(538:2). That is part of atmosphere setting because it contributes to the feeling of someone looking at you with a dark lantern through a door for 1 plus hours. This story being one of Poe’s most terrifying stories because of his excellent use of literary device of setting. The first major primary elements that were found while examining Poe’s writing was the explanation of the time of day through little key events, this is very important especially in this specific story because it really makes an image in the reader's head. In the story “The Tell Tale Heart” Poe has created fear and dread in many different ways through out the tale. The best way I think he creates fear and dread is through his descriptive words and how he tells every detail of how he does everything. In the beginning of the story Edgar explains of how whenever the narrator has eye contact with the old man’s bad eye, he feels something that makes him feel bad, “Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees --very gradually –I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever”(Poe 303). When he tries to change the mind of the readers that he is not mad, but only that he is very kind to the old man and is trying to keep him happy, “But why will you say that I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses --not destroyed --not dulled them”(Poe…
