One example I found to support this idea is found in (538:2) stating “I undid it just so much that a single ray fell upon the vulture eye.” To explain this quote from the book someone would tell that by showing how creepy and dark the room is, that the narrator can let a single ray of light out of the lantern just to see the vulture eye, however the old man laying bed is not able to see him. The next piece from the text that can be used as evidence is from (539:1) where the narrator made a slight noise, and with enough evidence the old man had gathered questioning that there was someone really in the room, he sprang up asking in terror “Who’s there?” The primary question asked does setting show a threatening tone, especially relates to this example because there is nothing more terrifying than hearing a noise in your room where you should feel the safest of all. The final piece of evidence that was understood from the short story on the topic of mood and atmosphere is found on (540:2) saying “a very, very little crevice in the lantern. So I opened it, you cannot imagine how stealthily.” Understanding that the narrator is referring to how cautiously he is removing the cloth from the lantern to show just a tiny crevice, he does this because he does not want …show more content…
The first piece of evidence that someone could see in the text would be in (541:3) “A shriek had been heard by a neighbor during the night.” Inferring that the setting is densely populated, and the houses must be close together for a neighbor to be able to hear a shriek from a household that is not their own. Next in (541:3) it explains how there were only three police that had come when the neighbor who had heard the shriek called. This tells that the town must have a high population for three police officers to come to the houses of the old man, also they must have suspected that there was a something that went on because the crime of murder happened a lot in the town so maybe it was unusual for there to be a call and nothing have occurred. The final citation cited in the short story would be on (540:4) saying that the old man and the narrator were the only people in room aside from all the small active bugs. To relate this piece of evidence to the main question someone would suggest that the fact that they were the only two in a room and house would also explain the neighborhood type, that there were not very many people living in each house just as the old man, creating a dark tone of a frightening small neighborhood. The telling of population
