According to the Television History Network, 99% of homes in America have at least one television set, and 66% have at least three. In this day and age, it is nearly impossible to not watch at least one TV show television. Television programs are flooded with advertisements, media and instant news. Although it might not be obvious, television has a large influence on our lives and on society as a whole. It seems anywhere we go and anything we do television’s influence is inescapable. For my sociology project, I decided to watch television for sixty minutes, while switching channels every ten minutes. By the end of the hour, I would have seen segments from six different shows. Rhetorically Analyzing a Controversial Matter Parents are often telling their children to “turn off the TV and go outside” due to the belief that TV does nothing to stimulate growth and development. Society agrees with the views of the common parent; television sedates the mind rather than engages it. Steven Johnson, a credited author, challenges this controversial topic, arguing that more complex TV shows actually require intellectual labour. However, the successfulness of Johnson’s argument can be rhetorically analyzed through his target audience and his use of mode, style, tone, and the three rhetorical appeals to ethos, logos, and pathos.…

The Russian Bride’s Attire is a life-sized oil painting by the Russian artist Konstantin Makovsky that is currently hanging in the Legion of Honor. At 110 x 147 inches, the piece pulls you in; as if you could step right into it and begin helping the ladies prepare the bride for marriage, or maybe bust her out of there. Makovsky is telling a subtle story through the composition and subject of this painting. The amount of emotion he brings with his angles and use of light and color is breath taking. He’s telling the story of a young girl who is set to be married off to the king, although this may sound glamourous, the girl looks unhappy, and no wonder; she’s a teenager preparing for marriage, preparing to leave behind her family and everything…
