In TV executive Lauren Zalaznick’s TED Talk: The Conscience of Television she shares the results of a market study that tracks the evolution of television by following the viewing habits of ten top rated shows over five decades and how it influences society’s beliefs, behaviors and attitudes. Television can be informative or educational when used as means of staying up-to-date on current events or soothing when used as a means to escape reality. When considering what might be right or wrong, television can be deceptive and even ambiguous depending on what you watch. Television has become the primary medium used to not only tell us, but shows us what is happening in the world and what is socially acceptable to believe, as Zalaznick states, “television is how we actually disseminate our entire value system” (Zalaznick). This study was meant to not only demonstrate why television has evolved over time but share how those changes have been a direct result of major current events or the economic state of our nation. Believing these things are “uniquely human”, Zalaznick cites a correlation between humans and the animal kingdom in regards to basic primal instincts. She says, “You have hunger; you have sex; you have power; and you have the urge for acquisitiveness” (Zalaznick).
