Late October 2016, a tragic accident causing multiple deaths and injuries made local and national news. When reported by NBC nightly news hosted by Lester Halt, the story seem to make headlines because of the popular application and it’s filter “Snap chat”, and when it was reported by Tampa Bay Times it seemed to make headlines because of the multiple fatalities that happened amongst a community. Television and newspaper have emerged as two types of popular mass media. How can the same story tell two different stories?
Watching the NBC Nightly News, immediately when the story aired a picture with the snap chat logo is present with words written “Fatal distraction”. This is almost to mirror a popular movie “Fatal attraction” to first get the

The letters are bold and black telling me, this is important. In the beginning, the writer, Tony Marrero Times staff writer, use very strong descriptive and auditory words to make the readers seem as if they were in the car. “A young man in the driver seat slams through the gas of his manual transmission as the engine roars and club music plays on the stereo “. It is mentioned that the speed is seen changing from one extreme to the next. “A woman is heard giggling”. This is creating an auditory sensory for the reader on the news broad cast, there wasn’t even mentioned of the girl giggling, if so the viewer couldn’t hear it because it got drowned out by the visual distractions, while continue reading the writer states the driver name, age, and what car he was driving. This is so if a picture or any image provided along with the story we can differentiate and recognize the cars that were involed. The writer “Tony Marrero” also included the place and time of the accident. He gives us another visual description of how the car crashed “slammed nearly head on”. Not only did Tony Marrero tell us about the main crash, but a driver of a third car was seriously injured. This information is important because it’s relating to the story. The article includes a report which names the time of the crash. There is a creditable logical statement made by sgt, Steve Biaskins, giving an actual statement about the crash and not snap chat. After the writer tells you the whole story about the accident, then he brings up the supposed cause of the accident, which is snap chat. Marrero named and described another accident allegedly caused by snap chat. This particular incident resolved into a lawsuit against snap chat, fortunately in this accident both suspects and victim survived. This is very useful because instead of trying to guess what happened in this recent

Many journalists believe that “emotional power can be harnessed” through visual media. One real-life journalist believes that television news has the power of “connect[ing] with the viewer’s heart” through storytelling. This charismatic, heroic image of the journalist is often portrayed in popular culture: a visual media that promotes accuracy and fairness while championing conscientiousness. But popular culture also reveals an unflattering side of visual media that can abuse its power to fabricate, trivialize, dehumanize, and seek profit.…

In the digital age, Snapchat is an example of a “new” medium that has an impact on society and technology. The immediacy of Snapchat has created a new social platform for users to communicate, send pictures and even video call in seconds. Snapchat was created in 2011, with the ghost as their logo. This ghost symbol is based off the concept “there, then gone”, in terms of photo sharing, but quickly became much more than just that (Drake, 1). The public’s desire for an application that allowed photos to disappear was the main force behind Evan Spiegel and his co-founders trying out their new app.…

I decided to observe the social platform of “Snapchat” which is a mobile app that allows interaction through media such as pictures and videos which self destruct after a couple seconds. In this day and age, Snapchat has proven to be a revolutionary source of media in both positive and negative ways. The most dangerous form of interaction this platform enables is momentary keyboard confidence, which related greatly with many of the readings and subjects we discussed in class. This is the concept of people feeling more comfortable expressing themselves in ways they would not in person. I personally noticed a common use for it in myself and my peers as a way to increase self esteem by showing a image for only a certain amount of time leaving less time to really analyze the image and pick out flaws.…
