Television has been playing a major part in our lives since its first debut in the middle of the 20th century. It has been the leading means of entertainment with a wide range of viewers from little children to the elderly expanding from Asia to North America in the past five decades since it has been popularized. In the poem, “Television”, the poet discusses the subject in a casual and humorous tone while pointing out problems caused by it. According to Roald Dahl, television stunts mind growth in children. After watching television, their thinking process is slowed making linking concepts and imaginative thinking far from their reach. Their worldview is limited to a box that dictates them on an ambiguous sense of right and wrong while they should be able to see the world through macro lenses taking everything into their account. In short, television is a hypnotizing machine imprinting its way of thinking on the viewers whether they realize it or not. Dahl also proposes an alternative to keep the children entertained which is reading. He puts emphasis on reading saying that books should be everywhere and in abundance. Children should be reading anytime and anywhere they go. He states that books have a lot of advantages when put into good use. It is horrifying to see people dumbstrucked watching television for hours and repeat the same absurd routine every day. The poet expresses his uneasiness with the situation in the poem. The Qur’an mentions about time management in Surah Al-‘Asr verses 1-3, “By time. Indeed mankind is in loss. Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.” In these verses, it is stated that mankind is in loss unless for those who believe, do good deeds and those who do something to remind others on truth and patience. The addictive nature of television prevents man from doing beneficial things and obligations to his religion and mankind. Television would cause a person to be negligent of his responsibilities, be it in his studies or his personal relationships (Abdur-rauf Shakir, n.d.). In conclusion, television has both merits and demerits. We need to improvise on how to implement it and achieve the best result for our children so that we would be able to benefit the most from it. The poem “Television” by Roald Dahl is an interesting poem which comprises of beneficial and truthful facts about television as today’s most influential media on young children.
