Not many people look beyond the statement that “T.V. is an idiot box” but writer Steven Johnson does and in result he makes you second guess your own opinion. Steven Johnson’s article Watching T.V. Makes you Smarter first appeared in the New York Times Magazine in 2005 it was an excerpt from his book Everything Bad is Good for You. In this article Johnson aims to convince his audience that certain video games, violent television dramas, and juvenile sitcoms can be beneficial to the human brain in the sense that it’s a “cognitive workout, not a series of life lessons” (279). While he may be the only one on this side Johnson’s use of personal anecdotes, organization, and word choice makes for appealing argument on a sensitive debate.…

The theory here is that Good News World is a program of higher quality compared to Being Lara Bingle. While reality television can be quality; rather than producing an idea, it takes a pre-existing idea and runs with it, and will only stay relevant as long as its content does. The primary role of television is being a unit of entertainment; the goal of educating and bringing awareness to current issues remains secondary under all circumstances. Television works through a combination of audio and visuals, but using these elements to their fullest potential does not necessarily guarantee ‘quality television’, which typically consists of, but does not necessarily align itself to defying the norm. Neil Postman’s 1985 novel “Amusing Ourselves to Death” presents many interesting and well-thought out claims, one of the major ones being about television and the dangers it presents to society. His main points on this subject pertaining to the fact …”that television has reduced our ability to take the world seriously.” By this, Postman is addressing the fact that all the information we receive now is through the television. Leading into one of his largest, and debatably most important, assertions, our society is morphing into something similar to Aldous Huxley’s “A Brave New World”. Where the people are controlled by entertainment and pleasure.…
