Today children’s are growing up surrounded by television and video. Most of the kids are introduced to television long before they enter school. There are multiple numbers of resources for education like educational programs on televisions, getting information from internet and so on. Launch of Television programs like Sesame Street or even play school have helped in acquisition of general knowledge and also improved overall cognitive knowledge among young children. Preschoolers can get learning the alphabet, nursery rhymes from TV, while grade schoolers can learn about wildlife, documentaries, scientific, cultural, cooking shows and so on. As Postman says, “It’s accurate to call television as a curriculum. A curriculum is a specially constructed information system whose purpose is to influence, teach, train, or cultivate the mind and character of the youth” (424). Likewise today teachers too make frequent use of TV, Internet and multimedia in classrooms so that students have better understanding to the topic and enter into more discussion to the content of the ideas presented. It has been seen that people generally remember about twice as much when they see and hear something , in comparison to when they only see or hear. With the help of television they can see historical event enacted, the solar system explored and novels come to life. As we know everything has its positive as well as negative effects. We as an elder’s need to make the younger generation understand and concentrate on positive impacts than negative impacts. Television does not undermine traditional classroom in fact it enhances general knowledge at early age before they start school. It helps in developing young children’s socialization, learning skills and enables them to share cultural experience with others. It prepares one with basic ideas and they don’t face major difficulty when they start school. As Postman says “Students mainly have learned that learning is a form of entertainment or more precisely that anything worth learning can take form of an entertainment” (429). Likewise if we use TV wisely, like with healthy viewing habits under parental supervision with limited screen time, no doubt it can act as a supplemental tool to educate, learn as well as entertain
