I did it… I have made it across the Teklanika River and it was a close one. If I hadn’t of wandered down the side of the river to look for a more shallow spot that I could cross, I don’t know what I would’ve done. Turn back I guess. I found a more shallow part of the river about a mile down. The currents were strong but I was stronger. When I made it across that river and got myself onto dry land, the relief that washed over me was overwhelming. I didn’t think that I was gonna make it at one point when I stepped on a slick rock and fell...But I did it, I got myself up pushing against that current and kept going. I can’t even begin to explain how happy I was to be standing there alive. I started hiking on the trail lost in my own thoughts. Hours

As I sprinted into the distance, I heard a noise and I looked behind me.…

In River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze Peter Hessler chronicles his two-year stay in the Chinese city of Fuling, Sichuan province, as a Peace Corps volunteer, from 1996 to 1998. Fuling has stood on the banks of the Yangtze River for thousands of years, surrounded by mountains, in the center of Sichuan province. Hessler’s arrival in this place of continuity, however, coincides with a period of dramatic change. The construction of the Three Gorges Dam will flood parts of the city and drastically change life in Sichuan. While working as a teacher of English literature at Fuling Teachers College, Hessler witnesses how a group of students raised on the dogma of the Chinese Communist Party reacts to his American style of teaching and interprets Western classics such as Beowulf and the plays of William Shakespeare.…
