How Teju Cole describes the pictures and the situations in each picture, it is almost like a story for each description. I enjoyed reading the descriptions instead of just having a picture to look at. It forced me to use my imagination in the same way as reading a novel verse a picture book. As for what it means to me, it means that people do not wish to be labeled by their past. A lot of the pictures were of people in jail and many of the people most likely did not wish to be labeled a criminal or a how they were in the past.
