David Freeman discusses the affects of different beverages and foods have on teeth in his article. Smoking has been proven to be a major contributor to bad oral hygiene, but Freeman says that we should be aware of foods and beverages that stain teeth as well. The chromogens, which tends to attach to the enamel on teeth, is the factor in food that cause staining. Chromogens are not the only thing that causes tooth staining, other factors include acidity and sugar. Acidity causes teeth staining because is wears down the tooth enamel, allowing for more tooth deterioration and allowing things like chromogens to attach on more easily. Freeman goes on to describe leading beverages that cause teeth staining, including wine, tea, soda, and sport drinks.
