Essay On Why Teenagers Should Be Infantilized

Why have teenagers been infantilized? Since the mid 1960 's eighteen has been seen as the point of adulthood (national park). It was at that age that we would set out into the world and become the productive citizens of society. However there has been a shift in this cultural standard. Nowadays most teenagers are lazy,full time pot smokers who have accomplished nothing with their lives. This is very disheartening when you think of how these people are supposed to be the leaders of the future. Though there are many reasons why this dramatic change has occurred but there are three paths that seem to cause this behavior the most. Young adults seem to be at the point of adulthood because a lack interaction with their parents, the cost of living has increased, and the system has been built to keep them oppressed. Until the recent century children had at least one parent who could stay home and watch over them. TV property expert Sarah Beeny says that “adolescents do not have to move out of the parental house in order to learn how to be independent ...and there are huge advantages to multi-generational living.”(Grossman) Multi-generational living is when you have people for every generation of your family living in one household. This might seem like a good idea but it does in fact increase infantilization which is bad. This is because by never leaving the nest they never venture out into the world which can cause a closed mind a well as a teen who can’t function outside of their family. An important of growing up is that you can do it without someone holding your hand.
