Teenage Suicide In The 1988 Cult Play 'Heathers'

Decent Essays
Heathers, a 1988 cult classic you may hear mentioned as the big sister to Mean Girls or Clueless. However, it takes on far raunchier topics than your typical high-school drama. Forget pretty in pink, this dark comedy is beautiful in black and far more sadistic than its successors. The film bravely takes on the topic of teenage suicide and the politics involved in climbing the social ladder. Winona Ryder portrays the smart yet cynical Veronica Sawyer, a junior at Westerberg High who has recently risen to the top. Ditching her dorky grade-school friends, she has become a member of the Heathers, a powerful clique namesake of its members: Heather Chandler (Kim Walker) the Demon Queen of high-school who rules with an iron fist , Heather Duke (Shannen

For this assignment, I watched the film “Pretty in Pink” (1989). Molly Ringwald acted as Andie Walsh, a poor teenager, who lived with her single father as a working class family. Throughout the movie, she struggles with the richer students at her snobbish high school treating her more like a misfit and less of an equal because she has less money. Andie holds her head high and brushes them off. Despite her opinion on people with money, she falls for Blaine, a “richie”.…

The costume and makeup with the production made me feel that the year is 1980 with the skirts, side ponytail, the letterman jackets the jocks wore with the straight legged pants, the make up with the bold colors, blush, big hair and bright lipstick. I also like the choreography because it reminded me of a Madonna pop video, I love the dance moves that was used in each scene. The aesthetic that was shown was the way the Heathers was dress: Heather Chandler wore red because it represent of her evil is all lust for power and blood, Heather Duke wears green to represent her wickedness and jealously, and Heather McNamara wears yellow because of her innocence. The costume designer aesthetic was making a conscious choice of making the costumes match the character’s personality. Amanda liked the doll house look for the stage production.…
