Addiction is something that has been increasing tremendously among today’s society. There are all sorts of addictions, gambling, alcohol, overeating, substance abuse, the list is continuous. This quote from the Qur’an, “You who believe, intoxicants and gambling, idolatrous practices and [divining with] arrows are repugnant acts－Satan’s doing－shun them so that you may prosper” (867), can be interpreted as to saying that addictions hinder or restrain us from accomplishing dreams and goals in life. Many people believe that they are too strong, too bright, and too in control to become addictive, but addiction can trap anyone. The effect varies, depending on the drug, the body, and normal health of the person. Drugs can lead to malnutrition, memory loss, deterioration, psychotic behavior, brain damage, and many more serious conditions. Unfortunately, I have seen this first hand. Since the age of 13, Efren, an uncle of mine, began to heavily use drugs. His health began to dramatically decline, his attitude, his way of thinking was no longer the same. Now, at the age of 31, the long term effects of substance abuse is apparent. He is one of many people that I personally know that have had problems with substance abuse. The short quote from the Qur’an previously stated above, isn’t only talking about shutting out the drugs and your addictions, but also the people who are holding you back from moving on. By simply getting rid of bad company, that can keep someone from following the wrong path. The youth are easily persuaded, by movies, celebrities, and especially by their friends. The ages are getting lower and the amount of users are immensely increasing.
As is, addiction is a very big issue for our society, with drug abuse becoming an even bigger one. Many people who become addicted to something, face very big problems. Poverty, family problems, both physical and mental health issues, which can be very hard to overcome.
