Imagine an unhappy teenage girl who cannot be herself because everyone around her is pushing her to be someone else. Is having individuality the greatest accomplishment? I believe author Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quote is correct for the following reasons: society needs to embrace who they really are, people with disabilities can overcome obstacles that they face, and individuals can be happy with themselves. Everyone needs happiness without it the whole world would be negative and rude. Imagine a world where entering a grocery store it is always the same negative attitudes and frowning faces. That is how the world would be without individuality. That is why people want to stand out so they can be different and be noticed. Being different can make individuals feel satisfied with themselves. For instance, Sarah goes home everyday and wishes she could be back at school. Her parents nor siblings finished school or care about their future. They are constantly telling Sarah “ Do not worry about all that silly school work. Marry someone that will work.” She has always known she would be extremely different than everyone in her family. Never giving up no matter how much everyone around her tells her too. She does not care to stand out no matter how much everyone tells her she is stupid. Knowing she is going to have an amazing future makes all of what they say go away. All her household is constantly making fun of her, but she continues to ignore the words she hears. Because she is making the right choice, she strives for the best she can do. It is harder for her though because her parents do not have well paying jobs, so there is a lack of money at her home. She goes to school dressed in ragged out clothing and her hair is not perfect.
