When preschool age parents separate, it is difficult for the child to process what is going on and how it will affect the family. When parents choose to separate prior to their child entering grade school, the child feels responsible for the parents’ divorce and they also feel they are being abandoned by their parents. When dealing with student’s in preschool when parents divorce, if the child has a good relationship with the non-custodial parent the child is likely to do good work in school, play well with others, as well as have good communication skills with their teachers. One of the main issues that teachers report with preschool children who come from a divorced household, is that often times they have behavioral problems and act out in order to get the teachers attention. Preschool teachers report that children who are dealing with divorce, often times report concertation problems, aggression issues, lack of participation in class, disobedience, and lack of communication. A professional counselor must also help the parents with providing consistency to their children making sure that the children are on a daily routine, the professional counselor must also encourage the parents to not talk poorly about the other parent in front of the children. The job of the professional counselor is to also help the child be able to communicate effectively with both parents, as well as to make sure that the child knows that they have a support system and are not telling with the divorce alone.
