Teenagers from Shakespearean time made bad decisions much like today’s teens do. The only difference is that teens were married through an arranged marriage, most likely to someone they did not know, by the time our teens reach dating age. Teens today are left with many more decisions, and dating the wrong person can lead to teenage pregnancy. In “Romeo and Juliet,” the Montagues and Capulets stayed away from each other. Juliet was arranged to be married to Paris, and had Juliet and Romeo stayed apart as their families were entitled to, they would not have needed to worry about the double marriage. Juliet would not have taken the potion so she looked dead, and neither would have had a reason to contemplate suicide, let alone act on it. Marrying the person their families wished them to stay away from was the reason they both died within a week of meeting each other. Parents should be able to prevent their teens from dating certain people because, much like in Romeo and Juliet’s case, they may make bad decisions, and often would have been better off if they had stayed away from each
