Teenage Boy Stereotypes In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

I think Shakespeare nails the typical teenage boy image, and one reason is because from scene 1 act 1, Romeo thinks he is in love with Rosaline. When we're teenagers, we tend to think that we know what is love, however we don’t because we lack from experience. I would say Romeo is not actually in love because he fell in love with someone else instantly. In today’s society, some teenage boy stereotypes are that they fall in love easily and move on easily. From the play, he is current in love with Rosaline, but soon enough he is love with Juliet and died from her (because of her) within a week of meeting her. Teenage boys are also usually immature and reckless and is shown when Romeo stabbed or killed Juliet’s cousin. I think these reasons explains why I think Shakespeare nails the teenage boy’s mind. …show more content…
One noticeable difference is setting, Romeo was allowed to free stroll around, meanwhile Juliet as a female was more conservative, usually stayed in at home. Her freedom of movement was restricted, which made her lifestyle different because she always had her nurse around. In the Elizabethan Era, men held more power than women, and women were raised to believe that they were inferior to men. Therefore their usage of speech was different. It seemed that Romeo was spoke whatever on his mind more freely than Juliet. When Juliet informs Capulet that she does not want to marry County Paris, she approaches more gentle with her words saying,” Not proud you have, but thankful that you have. Proud can I never be of what I hate, But thankful even for hate that is meant love.” Juliet could have been more harsh and rude telling her father, she is not interested in that arranged marriage.
