Among all the monsters in pop culture, the werewolf has to be considered the monster that is most relatable and likeable. In the book Werewolves: A Field Guide to Shapeshifters, Lycanthropes, And Man-Beasts it states “many people are familiar with the idea of a werewolf that someone can change, either deliberately or unwillingly, into a ravenous creature” (Curran). The werewolf demonstrates a type of release that many people long for and can never reach. A movie that demonstrates the popularity and fascination with werewolves has to be Teen Wolf starring Michael J. Fox. In the movie it shows how werewolves symbolize the struggle to control our inner urges because there is an uncontrollable transformation, fight between good and evil, and an …show more content…
There are individuals who have lost their battle with evil and have done some of the most horrific crimes known to man. In Teen Wolf the main character sees his transformation as a bad thing because he is unable to fully comprehend his abilities and be in control. During a basketball game Scott transforms and stuns the crowd to complete silence. He takes this opportunity to show off and impress the crowd with his new abilities. The crowd responds with cheers as teen wolf is able to win the game. From that point on he is the big man on campus and the basketball team moves from last in the rankings to first. Things are going good for Scott until the night of the school dance where he loses his battle with evil and attacks another student. The attack was spontaneous, not premeditated even though the victim was someone who bullied Scott. Situations such as this one in the movie show that even the most unsuspecting person has a dark side. The fact that the director chose to transform Scott into the wolf right before the attack suggest that the wolf is seen as Mr. Hyde and Scott as Dr. …show more content…
There are individuals who own animals, and there are zoos that put animals in zoos for display. People see animals as being free, wild, and exotic. The wolf is an animal that can either be a pack animal or live on its own. Wolves and dogs have a common ancestor which may help explain why the fascination with wolves are so strong. Out of all the mythical creatures in pop folklore the werewolf is the only true animal monster. “Werewolves feature so strongly in the genres of popular film and literature that the concepts found there tend to dominate ideas of any possible transition between human and wolf” (Metzger). The fact that Teen Wolf chose a werewolf to represent the struggle shows just how important the connection between human and animal
