In the world, people are often confronted with different problems. Each individual, however, chooses to either disregard those problems and leave them for others to deal with or take initiative to positively influence his or her community and others’ communities. Those who decide to wake up and make a difference for good in the world are called activists, but some are young teenagers still growing in their youth. Particularly, three teens, Malala Yousafzai, Alex Lin, and Iqbal Masih, have proved through their actions that they are conscientious, innovative, and assiduous. First, Malala Yousafzai, a conscientious, Indian teen activist, knows what is righteous and does what is virtuous. The Taliban, an international terrorist group, came to Malala’s community in 2004, and they injured, targeted, murdered people, and flogged women. They wanted to deny women from the right of education, because it would make them more powerful. In 2012, Malala’s school was terminated by the Taliban, but that did not stop her from going to school and getting an education. Malala was specifically targeted by the Taliban for blogging about education rights for women. Since the fifth grade, Alex has been working with his friends to help preserve e-waste that originates from electronics by recycling and giving it away to poorer countries for educational and more positive uses. Alex wanted to help ameliorate environmental issues when he stumbled across a Wall Street Journal article, which stated that e-waste pollutes the environment more and more daily. First, Alex and his friends started recycling old and unused computers in the community. Alex claims on a TakePart article, “When improperly disposed of-ie. dumping, burning, etc.-these chemicals can seep into the surrounding environment, harming humans, crops, and ecosystems.” Alex and his friends understood this situation and decided to do something about it. They started the Westerly Innovations Network, or W.I.N, which was a team that turned its full attention to recycling e-waste. This organization that Alex and his friends founded was gaining the eyes of other companies focused on e-waste prevention. On October 28, 2005, local officials in Westerly, Lin’s hometown, proposed the same bill that team WIN had proposed to the state house before, and this time, with a petition with 400 signatures, the bill passed on July 6, 2006, making dumping electronics in Rhode Island illegal.
