A silent epidemic is sweeping across the Unites States and is taking the lives of our youth of today, suicide This is a silent epidemic due to the fact that a teen will act and will not be found until it is too late. If we can get a grasp on what is driving the youth to want to end their lives, so that we can help them work out their problems. Their problems can be as small as another youth looking at them wrong, to their parents beating them. Low self-esteem, unworthiness, unwanted, and not being accepted are all what can drive a youth to commit suicide. Teen suicide is a growing epidemic due to many factors. This paper is going to show what are the leading causes of teen suicide and how to prevent them.

• Physical and sexual abuse (Bensley, Van Eenwyk, Spieker, & Schoder, 1999 ).
• Victimization (Borowsky, Ireland, & Resnick, 2001 ).
• Same-sex orientation (Russell & Joyner, 2001 ).
• Serotonin deficiency (Kamali, Oquendo, & Mann, 2001 ).
• Having a family member who had attempted suicide (Brent & Mann, 2006 ).
• Access to firearms (Miller, Azrael, Hepburn, Hemenway, & Lippmann, 2006 ).
It is important to know these factors so the youth can be helped in a timely manner.
In conclusion, besides the risks there are also a few signs to watch out for to help prevent teen suicide. Those signs include being withdrawn, having a lack of sense of purpose in life, not being able to focus or think clearly, rash or violent behavior, eating patterns or sleeping patterns changed, and a few others.
