While a teen might be labeled as a “stereotypical nerd or jock” to others they may not do things that they want to do. The “stereotypical dumb jock” to you could be one of the smartest students in the school he/she may not apply for college because everyone believes they aren't smart enough. When teenagers are grouped and generalized together it can cause the separation of friends which can lead to bullying. Teen stereotypes can blind parents and adults into thinking that because we are teenages, we are reckless, lazy, and only care about ourselves. These can cause adults to ignore differences in the way that different teens act and to make assumptions that aren’t true, only because we are teens. One recurrent assumption is that kids who get good grades in high school are nerdy and geeky. When adults make assumptions about “who” teenagers are they tend to hang out with others who have the same “title” that they were given. Since “teens are lazy” “all teens act the same” and “teenagers only care about themselves” are the most frequently used stereotypes against teens. They cause many problems about how teenagers act. The decrease of a good self esteem can cause a poor self image. A poor self image can lead to unmet goals and missed opportunities in life. And the grouping or generalization of teenagers can damage and break friendships. These three reasons are why teen stereotypes are destructive to teens and need to stop being
