What is teen pregnancy? Teen pregnancy is when a female under the age of twenty becomes pregnant. Becoming pregnant at this age can be due to choices made on one’s own or by force. I believe that teen pregnancy can have its ups and downfalls. It can either benefit teenagers that are experiencing pregnancy or it could cause harm; whether it is physical, mental, or emotional. The lives of the teens could be dramatically affected; not only their lives but the lives of the people involved, such as the immediate family. Depending on the decisions the young mother makes to keep her baby or not, it could help bring families closer. The United States has the highest teenage birthrate compared to other countries. “In 2013, a total of 273,105 babies were born to women aged 15–19 years, for a live birth rate of 26.5 per 1,000 women in this age group. This is a record low for U.S. teens in this age group, and a drop of 10% from 2012.” (CDC) Although the teenage birthrate for the U.S. has dropped 10%, teenagers continue to become pregnant, but why? There are multiple reasons why teenagers become pregnant. Some of these reasons include participating in sexual activities and in other cases, being peer pressured and raped. Even though this rarely occurs, another reason why teenagers become pregnant is because they didn’t get the love they believed that they deserved and wanted.
