In Caldwell County, North Carolina, there were 106 pregnancies from age 15-19 (“2013 Teen Pregnancies”). The rate of teen pregnancy rates from ages 18-19 was 85.5% (“2013 Teen Pregnancies”). According to the 2014 Caldwell County Community Health Assessment by Caldwell Memorial Hospital (page 24), in 2013 repeat teen pregnancy rates were higher in Caldwell County than in all of North Carolina. In alignment with the 2014 Community Health Assessment ,“ Communities In Schools is the nation’s largest dropout prevention organization. The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.” By supporting and empowering students to stay in school and achieve in life, Communities In Schools (CIS) is improving graduation rates drastically. This program could potentially serve to help teen parents with their motivation to succeed and move forward with their lives. Amy Krum says that she had two female students go to the program “Homebound” due to pregnancy. This program allows students to complete coursework from home for a period of time recommended by a medical professional working the Homebound teacher and the school thus graduating. According to The Community Health Assessment, The Caldwell Council on Adolescent Health created a program in 2014 with the hopes to increase graduation rates among teen moms. Caldwell County has been working on creating more areas for students to “hang out” in a safe environment with responsible mentors. Not only Caldwell County is supporting teen parents, however.
