“Parenthood is the leading reason that teen girls drop out of school. More than 50% of teen mothers never graduate from high school. And nearly 750,000 teen pregnancies occur each year.” (DoSomething) If birth control was offered over the counter many regulations would need to be set into place to ensure the safety of women because there is negative correlations that may come with the positive risk. Birth control methods should be offered over the counter without a prescription because it would significantly decrease the amount of teen pregnancies occurring each year and target groups who once before may not have had it accessible to them.

The teenage brain is not fully developed, so it may be more difficult to make the right decision when it comes to finishing high school or deciding to do a better thing for the child; such as giving it up for adoption. It is crucial that teenage parents graduate from high school and explore possibilities of college in order to ensure that their child has a financially stable life and possibly the family does not live in poverty. “Unplanned pregnancy and childbearing are also implicated in the failure of many young women to finish their college education. Research shows that 61 percent of women who have children in community college don’t finish their degree, and less than two percent of teen mothers who have a baby before age 18 get a college degree by age 30.”(Drop Out Crisis and Teen Pregnancy) If birth control was available over the counter solving the route of the problem may be much more simple than thought, and exploring possibilities of adoption or daycare while going to college part-time may not be a decision teen mothers will have to make at a ripe age.
