“Don’t downgrade me because I’m a young mother, help me because I’m willing to learn” (anonymous). In our society, today being a teen mom is not necessarily the issue, the problem is how young mothers are being treated. Because young girls do not have access to birth control or sex education, they end up getting pregnant causing them to be financially and mentally unstable.
Young teens do not always end up having the sex education they should have. They do not learn how to abstain from sex or the risks of sexual activity. People think that being older or as people call it wiser makes someone ready to be a mother. Truth is, no one is ready for the responsibility. The difference between a prepared woman and a teen is how financially stable they are to be able to “afford” a baby. A teen mom is still trying to finish school and create a better future for herself, how can she support a child? Truth is, this is correct. An adolescent can barely take care of themselves, how can they take care of a newborn? But comments like this denigrate teen moms and affect the decisions they make. “In general, teenage childbirth is more common among poor girls. But poor girls who live in places with a high level of inequality – meaning that the ratio of income at the median of the income distribution to the income at the 10th percentile of the income distribution is higher than in other places- are even more likely to bear children as teenagers” (Rich). It is unfortunate that the low-income girls exacerbate a situation by getting pregnant when they are not even financially stable enough to take care of a child.
