Portraying black women as Jezebel’s by nature is a long -lasting stereotype. The jezebel stereotype is one that has been used to put down African American women since the beginning of slavery. Throughout history the white women were seen as pure, hardworking and respectable, while black women were always seen as promiscuous, seductive and tempting men. Maria Miller Stewart who was a servant, teacher, abolitionist and women's rights activist shows through her literary work "Religion and the Pure Principles of Molarity, the Sure Foundation on which we Must Build." that black women show the same qualities as any other race of women and that they don't deserve the title of Jezebel. Many of these stereotypes in Skloot’s book painted blacks as unintelligent and vulnerable and led to many doctors taking advantage of their patients. Henrietta Lacks was one of these patients and unfortunately doctors made millions off of her cancerous cervix cells without her informed consent. Her cells, named HeLa cells, helped cure the polio virus and contributed to numerous other medical findings, but her and her family received none of the money earned from HeLa cells. Unfortunately, stereotyping based on race still occurs today and it has affected the lives of others terribly just like they did to Henrietta in the 1950s.…

Reading these articles supported the idea that stereotypes influence the development of identity for African American women. In developing social identity, the identity developed because of membership to a group is crucial in developing identity to one’s self (Thomas, Hacker, and Hoxka 530). As shown in Bany, Robnett, and Feliciano’s article, the stereotypes depict African American women as obese, highly sexual, and highly talkative to name a few stereotypes (Bany, Robnett, and Feliciano 203).
