Some people say that texting is part of the evolution of technology and that texting made a new language, which is cyber slang. The only problem is if kids can distinguish when to use the cyber slang, than texting won’t dumb down literacy. Texting could help you with your vocabulary because when a person texts you a word that you don’t know and then continue to use it the word will eventually be in your vocabulary. Wood argued that children are more prone to commit errors because of cyber slang because their minds are still in the formation stage unlike adults who have already passed it. Wood also argued against studies that said that when adults are shown misspelled words it reduce the ability to spell the word right more than children, which is also saying adults are more affected by cyber slang than children. With children getting more confused about writing they made ways to shorting it.(Language debates)
Texting takes up a lot of time like writing or typing, so teens have made a way to shorten it a.k.a cyber slang. Students who text using cyber slang like this everyday take it into school projects and homework but they also use it on job applications. Teachers are noticing that students no longer know how to correctly punctuate. The reason of this is that texting is mainly run-on sentences with no punctuation and no capital letters.
