One in five young people suffers from a mental illness. A mental illness, according to Mayo Clinic, “refers to a wide range of mental health conditions — disorders that affect your mood, thinking, and behavior”(Mayo Clinic). While being a monumental problem for many people, it is an especially important problem among teenagers. Being a teenager is a hard time, with the stress of jobs, high school, social lives, changing bodies, and hormones. It would be catastrophic to add another toxic ingredient to an already unstable cocktail of hormones and stress. With the many different mental disorders out there, certain people are more prone to mental illnesses than others. According to dualdiagnosis.org, “Males tend to have behavioral and autism spectrum disorders as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), while females are often prone to depression and eating disorders”(dualdiagnosis.org). Genetics also play a role in mental illnesses. If someone's family member, like their mother or grandfather, had a mental illness, the traits that allowed that illness to happen are passed down. Also, people who were raised in a family with abuse and parents with lower level educations are predisposed towards having a mental disorder. Finally, one of the worse things about mental illnesses, people who already have a mental illness are more susceptible to getting another one. That means someone that is already suffering from a mental illness, like depression, is more likely to get another one, like anxiety. Since mental illnesses are not more talked about, they cannot be that awful. Wrong. As stated earlier, a mental illness is a disease. And, all diseases are awful. One of the largest problems with mental illness is suicide and self-harm. Above, it is stated those are a kind of disorder. They also can be a side effect of having a different mental illness. Depression is the most common example of this. Someone with depression can feel nothing except that they are worthless, stupid, nothing is going to happen anyway, why even try? Just get it over with already. They deserve it anyway. They might think they do not deserve to live, so the try not to live. They try to commit suicide. That is one example of a problem of a mental illness. Other issues include: unhappiness and decreased enjoyment of life, family conflicts, relationship difficulties, social isolation, problems with tobacco, alcohol, other drugs, missed work or school, or other problems related to work or school, legal and financial problems, poverty and homelessness, harm to others, homicide, weakened immune system, and heart disease and other medical conditions, among other things.
