    v. State of Florida. I chose to go with the minority opinion, there are many reasons as to why a minor would be out past 11 p.m. From many past experiences, I can recall times when I had to errands. There are many reasons as to why a minor would be out during that time, such as family emergency, last minute errands, or even school projects with a friend. A curfew time should not be set by the law; this is more of a personal family problem that each family can solve by themselves. I believe that a curfew should be set by the guardian of the…

Should School Start Later For Teens? Everyone morning, teens across America must wake up early for school. However, what some people do not realize is that teens are not getting enough sleep, but is absolutely vital that they do. Nora Gold states that curfew laws take away some of the civil rights that teens and young adults have as Americans. Gold states in her essay, “The most obvious constitutional problem is that curfews grant police the power to detain citizens for nothing more than appearing young.” This quote is stating that curfew laws punish anyone who is out after a certain time just because they look young. This also gets in the way of teens who work night shifts for their job or even just being outside their house on the sidewalk (Gold, Nd). Another thing that curfew laws violate are some rights that the teens have from the first amendment, which are not allowing them to go to religious services and even meeting for school that take place at night (Gold,…

A huge debate in the United States is what the minimum drinking age should be. Some believe that it should be eighteen and others believe that it should stay at twenty-one. Some argue that one is legal at eighteen, so people should be able to drink also. A major counter argument that people argue is that other than the United States, Iceland, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand the drinking age is eighteen (Griggs). In recent discussions of changing the legal drinking age to 18, a controversial issue has been whether it is a good idea or not. On one hand some argue that if teens are old enough to serve our country then they should be able to drink. Just because they’re not adults, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have their born rights. Curfews imply that teens are dangerous, parents are incapable of properly raising their kids, and they promote racial profiling. Some may argue that curfews can keep kids safe; and can also cut down on crime. According to research, curfews have little to no effect on criminal activity. There is hardly any data to actually prove that set curfews can be beneficial to crime drop or communities.…

In the article “Curfews don’t keep kids out of trouble”, it is said, “There's only one problem with youth curfews: They don't work and we shouldn't kid ourselves that they do.” As long as there are curfews, there will always be the group of rebel teens who try to find loopholes or just completely disregard the rules. One example is when Detroit started curfews in 1976. Although crime dropped 6% during the curfew, there was an increase of 13% otherwise. Additionally, more than 80% of crimes committed nationally occurred between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m, hours usually outside curfews.…

As many people would say “Nothing good happens after midnight” A municipal ordinance curfew is a time frame given by an authority like the government or sometimes parents to teenagers below 18 years of age, to be home before a certain time. They were intended to limit a minor’s time without supervision from an adult, and to keep them off the streets during late hours. This has become a very popular way to attempt to reduce juvenile crime and to keep teenagers out of trouble, although this has not necessarily worked. Some teenagers feel the need to break their curfews as a way to rebel and prove that they can do as they please or to gain a social status. Although, curfews are meant to keep teenagers out of trouble, their effectiveness has…

Roughly 88,000 deaths are caused by excessive alcohol use each year in the United States. Excessive drinking is responsible for 1 and 10 deaths for people 20-60 years of age. This number is far too high and can be potentially reduced. Could it be possible that in America drinking has become so taboo that teens are not learning how to drink responsibly in a safe environment? Teens should be aloud to drink alcoholic beverages in their own homes with their parents consent so they can learn to drink responsibly and possibly reduce excessive alcohol deaths.…
