I will prove when it comes to teenage curfews whether it be for teens driving, teens being at home, or middle school teenage curfews, there should be a curfew. Teenagers are trying to fit into the adult world, but yet still need clear boundaries and rules to follow. They are trying to decide where they fit in and are susceptible to the influence of others around them. Without boundaries or curfews, teenagers can fall into situations they may otherwise not encounter. According to Sickmund, Snyder,and Poe-Yamagata, (1997), and Snyder, & Sickmund, (1999), “approximately 57 percent of all violent juvenile crime occurs on school days…..and peaks in the evening between 8:00PM and 10:00PM on non-school days” (qtd. In Sutphen & Ford, p. 60). Unless, the teenager is at work or with a parent/guardian, curfew should be around 8PM on school and non-school nights. There is currently a debate going on right now about times with curfew and whether or not one should be kept in place. This debate is happening all over the United States, not just in Indiana.
Everyday teenagers are killed or injured in motor vehicle accidents driven by fellow teenagers. Another motivation for implementing curfews on juvenile drivers it helps to eliminate the possibility of driving under the influence.
According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2012), “motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death of U.S. teens…about 2,650 teens in the United States aged 16–19 were killed and almost 292,000 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor-vehicle crashes…this comes to seven teens ages 16 to 19 dying every day from motor vehicle
