As a young child, it is common to have an imaginary friend that is created through near object. Tabin and Johsnns K’s essay, “Transitional Objects as Objectifiers of the Self in Toddlers and Adolescents,” takes special attention to this particular object that a child gets attach to and call it as transitional object. This attachment towards an object is possible when it has a physical appearance that is likeable. Children have limited information about the world they live in that they easily become nervous and anxious. Thus, preventing children from exploring inner selves and outer world. Providing teddy bears that are physically appealing allow them to reduce their fear by acknowledging that they are not alone. This can be seen in the essay, “Transitional Objects as Objectifiers of the Self in Toddlers and Adolescents”, which states that “[transitional objects] represent the guardian of comfort in the earliest repeated transitional experience (going to sleep) or the receptacle of the child’s first products that must accompany the child in the shifting about, thus shoring up a sense of wholeness” (Tabin&Johanna page 5). Transitional objects or toys can temporary take on the role of mother and provide guardian of comfort. Taking the role of guardian allows children to feel safe and secure, helping them to express themselves through their teddy bear. Gradually, they move on from expressing ideas through teddy bears to voicing their own ideas. Similarly, “Character Toys as Psychological tools” claims that, “self-expression can be considered a form of involuntary play reflection by means of which children start to understand themselves and the events of their own lives” (Smirnova page 37). Even though they have understanding of themselves and events happening around them, they need to know how to express their selves to others. To do this, children continue to enhance and deepen their sense of self by practicing communication skills with their teddy bears.
