Body language has been an imperative part of me for the last 8 years or so. While in the Army I learned about body language. Body language can tell you a lot about a person’s mood and intentions. While at a checkpoint as personal pass through you are taught to seek nervous behaviors and array of different behavioral markers to indicate danger. I translated this into my business life using the same techniques to identify different hand gestures, postures, and facial movement in order to determine emotions and if a person likes what they hear or if the person believes in what they say to me.

I very much enjoy the different take Amy Cuddy had on body language. She asked

The test levels of Testosterone and Cortisol to me is proof that since your nonverbal communication and verbal communication are so intertwined with your emotions that you can and will affect the other. I am curios how extensive the study was. She did not mention a control subject and the environment the students were placed in.
They also did not mention how many students either went through the study if I remember. Although she showed pictures of the students undergoing various possess I could not help to wonder if any other factors played a role such as Age, stress level, life experiences, and etcetera. So the interview section of the ted talks is something similar to the advice I give my clients before an interview or big meeting. Always push your interview or meeting for 10 or 11 o’clock in the morning. You don’t want them to be tired after lunch and you don’t want it to be too early in the day while they are scatter brained over the different tasks for the day. Most people want to take a break from their normal routine around these times any

The morning of your interview or big meeting slow down take your time. Leave 15 to 20 minutes early on top of your travel time. Although do not show up to early its rude they feel as though they have to accommodate you and push other things to the side. Rule of thumb is 15 minutes. Apologize for showing up early so if you did interrupt something they know you feel bad also this reminds them you did show up early and you are a punctual person. Rehearse how you plan work in company values and the company mission without directly saying the mission or values themselves. Generally you do this during the interview questions or your pitch. Always research who you plan to meet with and rehearse all the information to be said. Always show up early or stop at a gas station close by to use the mirror in the bathroom double checking your tie and clothes
You should also take a moment to stand tall and say five good things about yourself why you deserve the job why you will be good at what you do. Ensure no matter when you sit if it’s in the waiting room or in the meeting sit straight feet firmly plated on the ground and ever so slightly leaned forward. This shows confidence and openness also shows you are paying

Three goals I would set for my first 90 days entering in a role are; • Clarity • Challenges • Commitment First, I would like to get clarity of my job duties and expectations from my leader. Once I receive that information I would like to have some training classes if needed and a designated person for assistance. Secondly, I would try conquering my challenges by making a check list of do’s and don’ts and make sure that I follow up accordingly.…

Delivering the Pet Peeve speech was on the whole a relaxed and enjoyable experience. When the assignment was first issued, I felt a bit reluctant to deliver the speech; I’m only friends with a handful of students in the class, and probably disliked by the rest, so I couldn’t be confident in having a receptive audience. Due to my previous experience public speaking during coffee houses however, my apprehension was easily surmountable. I believe these types of opportunities to perform in front of a crowd on a limited scale are an excellent skill builder for affairs later in life, be it an impromptu toast at a dinner party, or reciting your wedding vows. As far as preparation goes, my approach was casual: I practiced delivering my speech two or three times on a timer, doing my best to fall within 10 seconds of the 3 minute mark.…

Did you know that approximately 80,000 people are being held in solitary confinement in the United States right now, and that these 80,000 people come only from the 38 states that still utilize solitary confinement in their prison systems? If the goal of prison really is rehabilitation, the inmates should be helped, not harmed. Solitary confinement is inhumane treatment and therefore, it should be abolished. For those of you who don’t know much about solitary confinement, here is some background: not all states still incorporate solitary confinement into their prison systems, but in Massachusetts, inmates can be sentenced to solitary confinement for up to 10 years, where they are only allowed 5 hours a week of outdoor recreation.…

Reflective Journal Assignment – Assignment #2 This whole interviewing experience was pretty great and interesting from both sides of the interviewing process; But while I was being interviewed, I felt a slight bit of discomfort during the process and felt that while my “Social Worker” (Bailey) was interviewing me was just a tad bit tense; And what I mean by her being tense is her posture was tense, like she didn’t really seem comfortable at all interviewing me, and her voice was tense as well, she spoke fast and rushed through everything which caused some discomfort. On the other hand, she did make me feel like I was being heard, she never once broke her eye contact with me and somewhat expanded on the questions she originally asked; Also she made it quite easy for me…

    1. In business, whether a follower or leader, it is important to listen and interpret the message a sender is trying to send. Nonverbal cues are helpful when interpreting a message in a face-to- face conversation, feelings may be expressed through the “speaker’s loudness, tone of voice, pace of speech, as well as watching the speaker’s facial expressions, posture, gestures and so on” (Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy, p. 290).
