Serial Killers: Behind the Mind
In order to solve murders and catch killers there has to be some research behind what makes them commit terrible acts. Without the research we have today criminal profilers and detectives would have a much harder job of determining the criminal’s next move or where they are hiding out from the police. People like Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacey, or Jeffery Dahmer could have claimed more victims if it weren’t for the research behind the criminal mind. “Statistically speaking, identified serial killers usually turn out to be white males of above-average intelligence who being killing in their twenties or thirties” (Vronsky 8). This perfectly describes the first known postmodern serial killer, Ted Bundy. People would describe Ted as well dressed, well spoken, very handsome, and some would say caring. “Their killings are often highly sexual in nature and rarely offer financial gain” (11). One example of a sexually drived killer is the notorious John Wayne Gacey. Between the years of 1972-1976, Gacey killed twenty-eight males and hid their bodies in the crawl spaces in his house. Later, he admitted to police he had killed five more and dumped their bodies into the river. Gacey would rape all of his victims, then eventually after torturing, he would strangle or suffocate them. When asked why he killed, Gacey stated that his victims were “Worthless little queers and punks” (201).
