What is our modern world filled with? Well, it is filled with an abundance of media presence. These presences, ranging from social media to the traditional paper format and television news has shaped our modern opinions. These opinions have affected how we look at society and revolving family dynamics as well. A powerful tool that the contemporary society use to not only to entertain but also to communicate and educate, a readily availability of media. However, despite these great advantages, this article, The Influence of Technology on Family Dynamics, focus on an ongoing debate about the effect of social media as a technology on our children. Villegas used many statistics in the paper to prove the point that the modern family has an unprecedented amount of access to social media capable technologies. One example she gave was, “In 2010, more than 77% of all American households had a computer, and 71% had home Internet access service”. Because of the level of access to social media in an average middle class American home, children under these household, spent more time on the internet than outside or connecting with family. Villegas proclaimed, “8- to 18-year-olds spend an average of 7 ½ hours a day, seven days a week with media” . This is a lot of time spent on virtual reality, instead of engaging in a face to face conversation, where a better interpersonal relationship can foster. These facts coupled with Televisions in homes, has certainty affected how the family socialized with each other. Before the wide availability of TV, I think family would have longer and more intimate talks on the lunch table. Well, you may ask and I will answer with a resounding and simple answer: technology has always been part of the human culture. When we started using tools, fires and etc, we were using some form of technology. Since this is a history of technology in communication, this article articulates how technology changed the dynamic of human to human interaction. And how media is used to communicated message to broad audience (look at the Trump’s Campaign coverage). So, to conclude this paper and initiate a thoughtful discussion, I want to propose four thoughtful questions:
1. How do you think media impact our everyday life?
2. Does this impact start young or late?
3. From reading this review, do you think that the author is doing justice to claim the negative impact of media?
4. Although I did not mention it in its full extent, the author does point out some positive impact of technology, such as easier long distance communication, but its unintended negatives are there, when left unsupervised. So, can you think of more impact of
