The impact of social media and technology has changed traditional methods of communication and permeates the vast users’ everyday life. Change incites two reactions: those in favor of and those opposed. Arguments for the former include transcending geographic differences, and increased control one has over other’s perception of them, whereas the latter believes that the new technology will strain relationships, and decrease connectivity on a deeper level with greater breadth. When I see comments, likes or shares of it, I get more frustrated. My digital identity is being shaped by someone other than me. My online persona will follow me my entire life; I want to be certain that only things that I know are safe are posted in connection with me. I have asked my friends numerous times to take these down or to crop me out of these photos and to be untagged but this is damage control. My online image maintained by me. On one hand, I can delete my account, on the other, this will happen regardless and at least this way I can maintain something of the image I want to project, and as well as the fact that I enjoy the articles I find and would prefer to keep that. This is false. Social media is a tool and its impact varies by it’s users’ interaction with it and their mindfulness of their company. Technology is a means to an ends for entertainment and communication between participants and like all technology, there are pros and cons to it. Phones are used as social security shields and when using one, people close themselves off to outside communication. Laptops function as databanks. Both can be used for information, communication and entertainment and often are but to different degrees with various use rates. I am just as likely to use my laptop as entertainment as I am for writing or schoolwork, whereas my phone is primarily used as a mix of entertainment and information, and rarely communication. When using social media, be aware of you’re environment and if you are with someone who likely expects your focus on them and not your screen or other people. We live in a world where we are expected to be on nonstop, and feel pressure to in the age of instant, but we need to be able to stay no and unplug even if it does strain relationships unless an understanding is
