Constantly playing games, surfing the Internet, and watching movies or YouTube videos restrict one from socializing with other people. Although, social media is utilized solely for interacting with people online, but there is a difference between interacting people in real life and in virtual reality. Children are highly dependent on technology for entertainment and socializing on platforms such as Twitter, SnapChat, or Facebook. Their reliance on technology to fulfill their social needs will result in poor performance when social interaction must be face-to-face, not through a screen. People believe that words stated online affects others less than words stated in person. 58% of cyber bullies believe that the person they are harassing online deserves the verbal abuse and harmful words they are receiving (Thomas). Not one human being deserves to believe their worth is less than what it is and feel less confident about him or herself because a person behind a computer thinks that “trolling” or cyber bullying is acceptable. Those who have been cyber bullied develop psychological problems such as fear of being attacked, low self-esteem, helplessness, and diminished love for themselves and others. Children are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and decreased academic achievement and motivation due to cyber bullying (Stopbullying.gov). Cyber bullies fail to recognize the psychological effects of their words to the cyber bullied and to themselves. Cyber bullies, as they grow older, experience substance abuse, criminal convictions, and abusive behavior towards the people in their lives (Stopbullying.gov).
