According to the National Institutes of Health, IAD ruins lives. It causes neurological complications, psychological disturbances, and social problems (Cash, Rae, Steel, Winkler). The focus of most research has to do with social skills but the other complications of an addiction to the internet should not be overlooked. Neurological complications and psychological disturbances are not issues that should be taken lightly. The National Institutes of Health elaborates on the topic by discussing the reason for these issues. The internet and success in video games or even likes on a post cause the pleasure pathway of the brain to send out dopamine, a neurotransmitter that works directly with the reward and pleasure area of the brain. After experiencing the “high” from success on the internet one experiences two things. The first downfall is the addiction to the feeling. The pleasure of winning a virtual game or receiving 100 likes on an Instagram post is desirable and is often craved once the user has got a taste for it. The second downfall is depression. The dopamine release from the internet is so controlled and constant that dopamine release from real life pleasure doesn’t equate to the sensation. All of these can be easily shared through social media; after uploading them to a profile, family and friends can be more involved in your life. A study on how senior citizens try to stay in touch with family and friends found interesting results. The initial hope was to find that older adults were able to use technology to easily connect with loved ones, but the results were different than expected. The subjects of the experiment reported that their time on the internet was not pleasant. They talked about how vapid language was on the internet. They also expressed the idea that the internet was a waste of time (Kinetics 2). In a perfect world the internet would be a pleasant place to stay connected. Unfortunately the results brought forth from this survey show that the internet is not always a safe, appropriate place. Social skills are essential to a person’s success in the professional world and in their relationships with family and friends. In this day and age that success is being put at risk. People are becoming so attached to their devices that their ability to interact in real world scenarios is diminishing. In a world that is so dependent on technology it is hard for a young person to resist the temptation to join the fad. Every new gadget is publicized and romanticized, making the viewer believe that it is not just an appliance but a
