The definition of technology is “the sum of the ways in which social groups provide themselves with the material objects of their civilization” (“Technology”). The material objects of the civilization in The Machine Stops are what ultimately led the people to their demise. The material objects of the civilization of the modern are what may lead this generation to their demise. On the other hand, the technological advancements humans have made are truly astonishing. However, without human interaction, these advancements can slowly tear society apart and can create the danger of technology taking over. While the society described in The Machine Stops and the society today can be compared through a discussion of the technology available to each- communication, transportation, entertainment and daily life, both societies share the potential danger of technology control. Even through the simple things of life, technology has begun to be an everyday part of life in the modern world.

More TV shows are wanted. More radio stations are being requested. More music from big artists is desired. However, entertainment in The Machine Stops was limited to the past lectures that were outdated and new ideas were undesirable. Also, the music was used to drown out the constant humming of the Machine that was always there. In contrast, people today use music as a tool for satisfaction rather than a drowning out like in the story. Humans have also advanced entertainment in the way of live streaming. For example, people can use phones to live stream football games and never miss a snap of the game. This access allows for people to enjoy any game at any given time, but it has allowed for people to not get out of their house and go see a game which can lead to less human interaction. The
