What Is Technology Ethical?

Technologies, as the main factors in modern society, have been applied in various fields. They can be applied to assist in people’s work and provide convenience for them. People invented a series of new technologies in order to help them to save their time. However, whether those technologies are ethical has become the heated discussion in recent years. Some people hold the opinion that if the technologies provide people with convenience, they are ethical. While others believe that some of the technologies have contravened the moral rules so they are unethical. These perspectives can be seen in Tenzin Gyatso’s article “Ethics and the New Genetics,”in which he talks about the benefits of genetic engineering. However, he also reminds people of …show more content…
It is hard to come up with an answer that it is right or wrong to invent and implement a technological innovation. Everything exists for its own reason, so the technologies must be helpful because of their being invented. However, no one can predict what will happen if new technologies are invented; no one knows that these technologies will be applied in what kind of immoral ways. Although some technologies really help people solve thorny problems, they still cause ethical issues. Just like Gyatso mentions that “It is no longer whether we should or should not acquire knowledge and explore its technological potentials. Rather, the issue is how to use this new knowledge and power in the most expedient and ethically responsible manner”(Gyatso 134). In such a technological society, both knowledge and techniques are well-developed. People can not live without technologies, but while using them, they may break the moral rules. For example, genetic engineering is the hottest topic these years. People can detect their genes and guard against diseases in advance. This technique sounds …show more content…
The consequence of misuse of technology is so serious that “today’s challenges are so great, and the dangers of the misuse of technology so global, entailing a potential catastrophe for all humankind that I feel we need a moral compass we can use collectively without getting bogged down in doctrinal differences”(Gyatso 139). Mistakes are unavoidable while doing experiments, but if mistakes happen while doing them, the aftermath will be terrible to deal with. Scientists used to make the super virus while failing to finish their experiment. Some people use the super virus to make biological weapons which are hard to defeat and will cause grave injuries. Once the biological weapons emerge, all of human beings’ safety will face challenges. It is really necessary to set up a set of rules to constrict the genetic experiments to avoid as many mistakes as possible. While the genetic engineering reaches the problem of general safety of the society, the personal health of people is also concerned. Living with so many different technological tools, people tend to shift their attention from one task to another swiftly, and the strategy of adapting to the multitasking environment has become a requirement for people’s brains. The multitasking become a normal phenomenon in modern society. Restak mentions the widespread phenomenon in modern society that “many personality
