Technology Readiness Level 1: A Content Analysis

Technology Readiness Level 1 begins with basic research and development it is the discovery or simplistic efforts toward creating a technology that may have some use. It could be as simple as a paper study, rudimentary creation in a laboratory or shop, or exploration of a new material created. This is the initial stage of taking and idea or outcome from scientific research and determining if there is a way to apply it in some application. It is usually very exploratory and more academic in scope. Limited funding is provided since this is very exploratory and the technology will have to prove itself for additional funding.

There many by physical validation of the concept through laboratory experiments. Focus is on the beneficial characteristics or parameters of interest. There can also be activities to build and test representative components for further evaluation. Modeling and simulation of the technology at the component level has been created and some amount of validation of the models are accomplished through test data.
TRL 4 is at the component or breadboard level of maturity with validation in laboratory environment. The technology is integrated with other components to ensure that they can work together. There is also evaluation of component interaction behaviors to determine if there are unforeseen events occurring that need reconciliation. Integration into a systems concepts are considered for further maturation. Validation or reconciliation between components for how breadboard hardware and test results differ from the expected system goals. TRL 5 is a continuation of the component, breadboard or initial systems by interfacing them with other components and systems that they would be interacting with in the expected adoption application.
