Summary: Integrating Technology Into The Classroom

Technology plays a prominent role in our everyday lives. Because of this, teachers should implement lessons to teach students how to use technology responsibly. While some traditional teaching methods still have value today, it is essential for teachers to adopt technology in their classroom. Implementing technology challenges educators, but it empowers learners to meet the demands of the 21st century. Yoo and MacDonald (2014) define 21st century skills as critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, communication, leadership and management skills. If planned properly, technology makes the lesson more learner-centered and encourages the student to take a much more active approach to their own learning. Teaching students these 21st century skills will prepare them for success in the real world.
Integrating technology into the curriculum brings a wide array of positive impacts. According to researchers, technology plays a significant role in increasing student motivation, engagement, and achievement (Challoo, Green, & Maxwell, 2011). Providing students the opportunity to use technology on a regular basis breaks the monotony of school, gives students independence, and provides more opportunities for critical thinking. According to Kopcha (2008), moving teachers toward technology adoption can take a long period of time, but using teacher mentors and establishing a community of practice around technology would help increase teacher interest and improve their attitude toward adopting technology. As a result, I would propose devoting time during our Personal Learning Community time will allow peers to musing peers to model effective uses of technology.
