Our world as we know it is a result of the Industrial Revolution. As the rise of factories, machines and other technologies began in Britain in the 18th century, it brought with it huge advances in society. The Industrial Revolution kicked off the beginning to a forward movement of technology in our world that would not be slowed down. To put it in perspective: writing has been around for 200 generations, books have been around for 20 generations and computers have only been around for less than 2 generations (The Dangers of…). In the scheme of history, the speed of technological advance we are experiencing is rapidly exceeding the speed of advance at any other time in human history. Society is relying more and more on our personal technology such as computers, phones and tablets. Relying on technology in every aspect of our lives brings issues to our social lives and to the overall culture of society. Some of these consequences are already visible as children are exposed to technology and replace normal play and learning with use of their phones. The social life of a teenager is so dependant on their cell phones that the whole way of communicating socially has dramatically changed in the last ten years. Modern medicine has saved many lives. Schools have been able to improve education through technology. Inventions of all kinds have provided comfort and conveniences to many lives throughout the world. The economy and businesses have flourished through means of technology. “By getting involved in the advances in technology, you can offer customers new ways to purchase products and help customers to get instant support for product returns and shipping issues” (The Benefits…). Technology provides a simple, convenient way to circulate money that the world has never experienced before. Though all these aspects of technology are positive and beneficial to humanity as a whole, we cannot disregard the baggage of negative effects brought with these progressions in technology.
