The Technological Advancements of WWI and WWII The complex technology of World War I and World War II differed and was improved greatly in many ways throughout the wars. These wonderful technological advancements from the wars are still used today. Therefore, there were many leading factors that helped build up the technology in the wars. The differences in the tools and equipment used between the two wars varied greatly. In World War I, the majority of the technology invented was very simple, yet complex. The tank was one of the most widely used types of equipment operated in the First World War. Tanks were called “death traps” due to the fact that they were so powerful and they killed so many people. Hitler put in money to be able to research and make new technology in the Second World War. With this funding from Hitler, Wernher Braun invented the V-2 rocket missile. Hitler came up with an idea himself. With this bright idea, he demanded that a car called a “Volkswagen” be made for families to transport places. The Volkswagen, nicknamed “People’s Car”, was made to be affordable for these families. The first Volkswagen was sent out in 1938. The Enigma, a cipher machine, was made by the Germans. The enigma required two people, each with a special role, to work it. They changed the enigma every day because they thought hanging it would make the enigma indestructible. In 1940, Alan Turing and his team got together at Bletchley Park in England and together, they cracked the first enigma message. Alan Turing also created the first computer that could crack an enigma message made by the Germans. Tanks had more firepower and got stronger and faster in World War II. In WWII, aircraft carriers were used instead of battleships. The complex aircraft carriers had a greater range and heavier striking power than those of the battleships used in World War I. More technologies invented in WWII were the assault rifle and the rifle that was interestingly semi-automatic. They became the most advanced in the world with a wide range of technology and invented new technologies, such as jet aircraft, pusher propellers, metal aircrafts, rockets, and the use of wind tunnels. Everything they did was made a secret, which helped them be so advanced. The Germans designed many of the most accelerated aircrafts in the world during this time. They were advanced in any kind of research imaginable, and they were very advanced with their metal aircraft invented. In fact, this metal aircraft included the world’s first jet fighter. This jet fighter helped the Germans dominate in the war. The Germans used their technological advancements to overwhelm their enemies. This technique worked, and they overwhelmed their enemies as they had planned. Even though the Germans created and advanced in many different areas, only a few of their technologies and ideas were used during war. One thing used during the war was called the “sweeping of wings.” This “sweeping of wings” helped the aircraft go higher without having excess weight on them. Another used invention was an instrument system. These instrument systems were for the Germans own airfields. They directed the aircraft at the targets. The majority of these German designs are still used today. The aircraft nowadays were made by the Germans. The faults of the German technology back in the war are lessons that we learn from today.
