In “Against School,” John Gatto argues that the main purpose of public schools and the educational system in general is to produce a “manageable” populace. Gatto argues that the current educational system does this by slowly acclimating students into certain habits, confirming students to certain rules, and implementing a certain mindset into students that makes them respond well to authority. All of these things that Gatto argues adds up to make a system for training a complaint workforce. Firstly, schools achieve what Gatto states their purpose is by acclimating students to how factories are organized and what working in a factory is like. Also, if kids are given the freedom to either pay attention, or use electronics irresponsibly, they will become more responsible. Although some kids may get distracted if they have technology in front of them instead of paying attention in class, it will make students learn,…

In Dead Poets Society, Mr. Keating shows a different and more hands-on experience of teaching than the standard way the school teaches. Learning by example versus learning by notes is a huge difference for many, and it can drill the message deeper into further understanding. Dead Poets Society does a good job demonstrating the emotions that result from these two different tactics. When educating a teenager, Mr. Keating’s Transcendental philosophies are better to use than Welton Academy’s philosophy of Tradition, Honor, Discipline, and Excellence. Teenagers need guidance, reassurance, and the tools to equip them for life later on.…

In past centuries education has been a privilege, reserved only for those who either had the means or the desire to learn. As a result the people who were educated loved to learn. I believe that currently we are destroying that love for education by forcing students to go through a standardized curriculum. I also think that by teaching everyone the same things, in the same way, we are destroying individuality. While everyone needs an education, I refuse to believe that true learning can be found through a “ one size fits all” educational system.…
