Technology In Language Arts Classroom

“Twenty two percent of teachers have access to the right level of technology in the classroom.” (PBS, 2011) In this research paper, I will look at technology and the effects on students and teachers; specifically, in a language arts classroom. The problem will be examined over time as technology has changed. In addition, how technology has been integrated into the classroom.
There are many facets to technology use in the classroom. The first is how technology is use has changed over time. Schools have not always had access to laptops in a classroom. Teachers used to have students type all their papers with typewriters. But, we have slowly moved to using over time technology in the classroom. Especially, in the language arts classroom. Technology

Film was one of the first technologies used in the classroom. There were both commercial and non- commercial films used in the classroom. Commercial film was film that was mass produced for use in the classroom whereas noncommercial film are films that were not mass produced and created for the classroom. Film was considered a progressive technology and teachers who used it were considered innovative. Although, film was introduced in 1910’s- 1930’s was not often used because of its cost and teacher’s inability to use technology. Radio was believed to broaden a child’s universe. There were specific shows on air each day that teachers could tune in to and share with their class. These shows ranged from history all the way to science and literature lessons. Radios provided many problems because the receivers and equipment were hard to attain and upkeep was expensive. Another issue brought on by radio was timing of shows. Radios had specific air times and if that time was missed it was very hard to repeat the show. Furthermore, teachers did not have control over what was playing on the radio.
In the 1950’s television was integrated into the classroom. Teachers began integrating television into the classroom. Teachers used television in three different ways: to teach a full lesson to students, to supplement teaching, and as a learning aid. Television was difficult to use in the classroom because many teachers did not have the background knowledge on how to use it.
